Building 1320 Elevator Replacement, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, RI

Brief Project Description:

The project involves upgrading three passenger elevators and one freight elevator at Building 1320, each serving six stops. Work includes replacing elevator controls, hoist machines, motors, equipment, electrical and mechanical systems, cab finishes, life safety systems, and security features to meet current code requirements, reduce maintenance, and improve reliability. The scope also covers hazardous materials abatement, oil handling, and removal/disposal of existing components with prior approval from the NSN EV Department. Startup, testing, and reporting of existing systems are required before construction, along with final testing, repairs, and approvals at completion.

Since the building will remain occupied, at least one passenger elevator must stay operational at all times. This requires temporary two-hour fire-rated separations and protective barriers during construction. The contractor must provide detailed phasing, scheduling, and site plans for approval and coordinate with NAVFAC Midlant’s Vertical Transportation Specialist and Fire Protection Engineer throughout the project. NUWC escort requirements must be followed for secure access, and all outages or after-hours work require a minimum 14-day notice. Any existing work impacted must be repaired or replaced to match adjoining finishes, leaving the facility in equal or better condition.
